New media has its beginnings since 1830s. Today, there are many technologies are exist that are part of the new media. These technologies are referred to as Web 2.0 such as blogs, wikis, online social networking, virtual worlds and other social media forms. Today, internet and new media can not be separated. We can find jobs and learn more about careers in internet & new media. Everything is being communicated these days through internet: politics, business, entertainment, medicine, etc. Almost every organization needs its own web page and internet connection for communication to continue their existence and success. Social networking has grown tremendously. Starting from simple e-mail exchange and finishing virtual rooms. New media is totally replacing the old media. Some people believe it is a great accomplishment and makes lives so much easier and some do not believe so. On one hand, almost everything could be accomplished with just a click of a button; on the other hand, our lives and normal activities are being replaced by machines. Also, identity theft has grown as new media progressed.
This week I visited a lot of new media sites. Some of them I have used in the past, such as Wikipedia, myspace, youtube, facebook. I was amazed when I visited Flickr, photo sharing site, where you can even get a Capital One credit card with your own picture on it. Since I already have an existing card I just downloaded my picture and now impatiently waiting for the card to arrive. I did not have to much interest in Friendster. I believe there are many more newer and more fun sites than this one. Second Life, 3D virtual world is awesome. This was my first time visiting it and I am definitely going back. Joost is great for busy people. All favorite shows are there whenever you want it. One can also express his/her opinion in forum.
Therefore, we need to be careful how much we allow new media and technologies in our lives. The websites that seem harmless for us and our children could have a life changing affect. I believe we have come so far and achieved great progress that there is no reason to stop as long as innovations are not harming the society.

I agree with you that what may seem innocent now can have long-lasting affects especially for children. Although new media can be informative and fun, it may also separate people from reality and make them complacent as to whats going on outside of the internet.
